America's Best High Schools

The America's Best High Schools was ranked by U.S. News & World Report, reviewing 18,790 high schools in 40 states using these three factors: 1) Standardized test performances. 2) Proficiency rates of all students, including the least advantaged. 3) Having a challenging college-ready curriculum.

The newsmagazine recognized 505 schools with gold or silver medals, including the top 100 schools. Bronze medals were given to 1,086 high schools that met the first two criteria, but not the third criteria.

But according to Associated Press, the report made a mistake in calculating the score for one school, Montpelier High School, and erroneously ranked it the nation's fifth-best public high school.

The financial services giant, which analyzed data for U.S. News & World Report's inaugural ranking of America's top 100 schools, made a mistake in calculating the score for Montpelier High School and erroneously ranked it the nation's fifth-best public high school.

Turns out, the magazine now says, the school's among the top 500 of 18,000 high schools nationally but not the top five, as the magazine reported in its "America's Best High Schools" rankings Dec. 1. ......

The error will be acknowledged in the U.S. News & World Report magazine hitting newsstands Dec. 17 and will be fixed in the online rankings, according to Kelly, who wrote a letter of apology to Montpelier school officials Monday. ......
